The first written document mentioning the settlement dates to Oct 27, 1179. The charter refers to Jablanac as Ablana and tells us that the town already had its own church at this early date. The town is listed in the ranks of free royal towns in the 12th century. During the Turkish era it suffered from lootings and attacks to a degree that it Jablanac became totally depopulated. The new settlement took place in several waves during the second half of the 17th c. Groups of Bunjevac settlers arrived from more northern parts of Croatia. Finally, those Bunjevci who stayed permanently hailed both from the north, from Lika County (Krmpote and Krivi Put regions) and from the south (Pozrmanje, Ražanac, Posedarje).

The dry wall between Panas Hill and the Velebit preserved the inscription of governor Dolabele. It was established to mark the border between the Illyric Ortoplina and Begiosa tribes.

On the cape by the harbor, on the plot of today's Hotel Ablana the ruins of the castle built in 1251 by Croatian Ban Stephen Šubić are still visible.

The St. Nicholas Church, mentioned in the 1179 charter can be found in Jablanac's cemetery. It gained its current shape during the constructions of the 16th c. and of year 1701.

The St. Joseph's Church, situated on the riva, on the main street interior includes one 18th c. stucco sculpture from the Somazzi workshop and one 19th c. wooden sculpture, this latter being a piece by Bartol Devčić.

The title of the mountaineering hut at the lowest altitude of the World belongs to the Miroslav Hirtz Hut found in Jablanac. This building is set just 20 m above the see level.
